Basque Language Directorate

The general tasks and functions of the Basque Language Directorate are as follows:
a) Strengthening the commitment of Guipuzcoan society to the normalisation of the use of Basque.
b) Intensifying and consolidating activities and collaborating with other administrative bodies on measures to normalise and promote the use of Basque, on behalf of Gipuzkoa Provincial Council.
c) Planning, supervising, coordinating and assessing the plan for the normalisation of the use of Basque and other activities connected with the use of Basque in Gipuzkoa Provincial Council?s administrative affairs, in collaboration with other departments.
To be more specific, the working programmes of the the Basque Language Directorate extend to the following aspects:
- Helping local or regional periodicals, in order to achieve competitive products and improve the conditions in which they are produced.
- Supporting the spread of the use of Basque in the field of communication and information technologies.
- Supporting activities aimed at adapting traditional Basque culture to communication and information technologies
- Promoting investment in the creation of digital contents connected with Basque language and culture.
- Helping to create and disseminate audiovisual products in Basque.
- Encouraging the promotion of books and reading matter in Basque.
- Supporting the activities of publishing companies in Gipuzkoa who publish books and audiovisual material in Basque.
- Supporting the diffusion of authors writing in Basque.
- Supporting initiatives favouring the social promotion of the use of Basque.
- Promoting the development of the General Plan for the Normalisation of Basque in Gipuzkoa.
- Planning, introducing and assessing the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council plan to normalise the use of Basque.
- Supporting investments that are considered to be strategic in the sphere of Basque Language and culture.
- Encouraging and supporting R+D initiatives in the field of Basque.
- Planning, managing and assessing plans for the use of Basque in Gipuzkoa Provincial Council.
- Collaborating on plans to normalise the use of Basque in public bodies dependent on Gipuzkoa Provincial Council.
- Organising and managing the language training plans for Gipuzkoa Provincial Council staff
- Supporting the work carried out by municipal technicians to normalise the use of Basque.
- Organising and supporting programmes to extend the social use of Basque in the field of culture, leisure and sports.
- Managing and coordinating the translation of Gipuzkoa Provincial Council documents, not only between official languages but also into EU languages.
- Defining and establishing criteria for the correct use of official languages within Gipuzkoa Provincial Council.
